That is the question.
So my 3 year blog hosting renewal notice came. Weirdly they want to charge me 3 times the amount they did for the last 3 years. How rude! Anyway, I am now faced with the task of evaluating my continued existence in the blogosphere. I mean, it’s okayyy in here I guess. I like doing it. But I also like not doing it (see summer of 2021 giant hole of no posts). The question is, which do I like better?
Sigh. I could take the time and migrate the blog to a new host (or a free blog site with a not-so-fancy domain). Or I could take it all down and have a “celebration of life” for it. Either way it’s a tough decision. If I do migrate the blog I will need to renew my commitment to it.
I’ll need to have an answer within the next 10 days. Hopefully I will be given some kind of sign telling me to do one or the other. In the meantime, I will just stew and worry about what to do. This is the way.
Hello friend, I totally get your ambivalence about blogging. I flip flop about it on a nearly-daily basis—and this is coming from someone who, for the most part, loves blogging!
In case it might encourage you to keep going, I just found out about a very low-cost host called Hostinger. Another FIRE blogger wrote a detailed review about them: https://thriftyhustler.com/blogging/move-to-hostinger/
Either way, I think you gotta do what sparks joy for you. If blogging isn’t it, don’t feel bad about sending the blog off with that celebration of life, LOL.
Thank you 😊 I will check out Hostinger! You definitely have to keep going, your blog is amazing. I will definitely post an update when I make a decision! For now, stewing about it.
Follow the heart…
I’m in the same boat T. My last post was in Jan 2021. Since then I’ve been hemming and hawing on whether I want to recommit. The pandemic threw me off my game and I have had trouble finding the focus, motivation, commitment, time… all of the things it takes to write regularly. Recently I had a renewal come up too and I think I’m pretty certain I’m going to let it lapse and officially stop blogging for now. I’m happy with what I did while I did it, and how much I’ve learned, and the friends I have made! And while I’m still very active on our journey to Financial Independence I just don’t think I want to write about it anymore. If you keep writing, I’ll enjoy it. But if you don’t, I totally get that too. No matter what you have put some great stuff out and helped a lot of people, including me.
Amelia, I found a new blog hosting company that is far more afforable if you are interested…I’m sad to see the Useful Root exit the internet forever, however I totally get it. Thank you for your support on this blog!! I think I’m going to keep going. Reason being I’ve found it helps me keep focus on my FI journey. Over the summer, I’ve been kind of carefree about money *gasp* which involved spending I probably didn’t really need to do…I think just the act of writing about the journey on the regular helps keep me on track. Even if it’s only tracking posts once a month, or reflections on next steps in the journey. Hopefully we can follow our FI dreams with our without that extra motivation!!
Hey T,
You know I’m a big fan… Since I already pay for a website that has had ZERO decent blog writing in years!!! Maybe we could team up??? We all want you to continue your journey, and maybe being the house, mmmm garage, writer for FI Garage isn’t your thing…but it’s free and you get to post whenever you like, and naturally have your own little corner of the garage. Anyway, just throwing out an idea to help keep the Canadian community as great as it is.
PS. It will cost you a few NB beers!! lol
Ummm, this is brilliant! I would LOVE to see a T on FIRE x FI Garage collaboration!
Wow! Thank you so much Money Mechanic for the very kind offer. But I have news. I have found a new, much more affordable blog hosting company and purchased a subscription for 3 more years! So I guess I better get my act together and start blogging again. That said if you ever need something written for the FI Garage site, I am happy to help! Although I think you’re doing great with the podcast, so who needs a blog anyway!?
